Rooted: An Ecology of Gullah Geechee Memory Along the Coast
This project was made possible by the National Park Foundation’s Inclusive Storytelling Grant.
Rooted: An Ecology of Gullah Geechee Memory Along the Coast explores the enduring relationship between Gullah Geechee communities and the landscapes that have shaped their culture for generations. Through personal stories and lived experiences, the film traces a legacy of language, ecological knowledge, tradition, and resilience while examining how climate change and development threaten both land and cultural heritage. Rooted in memory and connection, this is a story about identity, stewardship, and the power of carrying history forward. Stay tuned for the release of an expanded virtual exhibit later this month, offering a deeper exploration of the stories, histories, and voices featured in the project.
